"Commander Cavilo, both my parents died violently in political intrigue before I was six years old. A fact you might have researched. Did you think you were dealing with an amateur?" --The Vor Game
Gregor was born to Prince Serg and Princess Kareen as the Emperor-to-be of the Barrayaran Imperium. His father was a poor leader and a deeply disturbed man, so much so that his grandfather, Emperor Ezar, staged a war and made sure he was killed in it rather than let the Empire fall under his control. Gregor was left with his mother once Ezar died of old age, and was then made an orphan during the political unrest and attempts to seize the Imperium that followed, called Vordarian's Pretendership. Gregor was a young child when he became Emperor, and was subsequently raised by his Regent, Admiral Count Aral Vorkosigan, and his wife, Countess Cordelia Vorkosigan, who was the individual who ended the Pretendership by engineering Vidal Vordarian's death.
As a result of the violence he experienced when he was very young and so much pressure being placed on him becoming Emperor in name if not in power at such a young age, Gregor grew up an extremely reserved young man. He does not often let people close, partly to protect himself and partly to protect those around him. He takes his duties as Emperor with deadly seriousness and has an extremely acute understanding of how important the office is and how critical his role is in filling it.
That said, he does not particularly enjoy being Emperor, most of the time. He finds himself uncomfortable with the power he has, both because the weight of the responsibility is heavy and because he fears the genetic predisposition to mental illness that runs in his family, generations back from the horrible father he barely knew. He genuinely fears wielding it incorrectly, or in such a way that it does not benefit Barrayar as a whole. He is also deeply and naturally inclined to personal reserve, all other things aside. Miles Vorkosigan, his foster-brother, describes him to a third party once by saying "He'd be shy if he could, but he's not allowed." His office prevents him the luxury of peace, quiet, and privacy as well as demanding his service. While he has gotten over his resentment of his responsibilities and his depression at his potential inability to fulfill them (this was not always the case, and he attempted suicide and ran away from the Imperium briefly at age 25 before Miles was able to rescue him) he has grown into his role by age 29 and accepts his lot in life and all of the positives and negatives that come with it.
Abilities/Skills:
Physically fit; capable of hand-to-hand combat as well as knowing how to handle firearms; well-educated and completed officer's military training; extremely talented at reading people and negotiating.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
- intelligent
- excellent negotiator
- level-headed in a crisis
- strong moral compass, leadership skills
- good with hand-to-hand combat
- he's a pretty good actor when he needs to roll with a situation
Weaknesses:
- relatively little experience outside the Imperium, so he's been sheltered out of the necessity to keep him safe
- shy
- constantly worried he's going to go crazy and murder a bunch of his family like some of his predecessors
- indecisive, particularly when it comes to heavy or morally ambiguous decisions

[His voice chills slightly.] Unfortunately, he also happens to be missing, and under normal circumstances I wouldn't be worried but considering how kidnapped we all are at present I'm more generally inclined to panic. Miles, if you're seeing this and you don't respond, We are officially deeming you in trouble. [He knows Miles will catch the emphasis of that royal 'we', even if nobody else does.] If someone happens to locate him, be sure to return him to me or to his cousin, Ivan Vorpatril. [Dryly.] If it is deemed to dangerous to attempt capture while he is roaming free, please at least let us know where he is and that he hasn't been shot dead somewhere. Again.
[The humor drains from his face after a moment, leaving him looking simply very tired.] Honestly, just--he's important to us, and we'd like to know he's safe. ...thank you.
